Urban expansion

I will talk about something that has been the most studied issue on this semester, it was important for Social Geography with the professor Lukas and Sectoral Economic Geography with the professor Leonardo Muñoz. Approaches and ways to talk about urbanization or urban expansion are quite different for both subjects I would say that they talk mainly about cultural and economic factors.

With these subjects till now I have learnt that cultural and economic factors are linked, for example: today people don’t feel any security even where they live, also they don’t have where to live. This is a consequence of Pinochet dictatorship that implemented a neoliberal model that left our country bases alone, privatizing health, education, eliminating help for getting living places, reforming public pensions, and many other things that are aspects of life that are state’s responsibility, it is a fact that state should take care of these, but it went to the private sector. They lost their reassurances and got a feeling of vulnerability that forced to go to the hands of the property sellers, building homes sectors with the intention of getting more utility, generating segregation between high wealth people and low wealth people because of their capacity of paying. It got worst because of state’s social living places, they used the same logic building where they could get cheaper soil.

Also, this urban expansion has affected Mapuche communities on diverse scales and that’s why I selected these ideas for my works this semester, I guided them between them.

There is nothing that I don’t like of these ideas, the only thing is that there are many books that have not been traduced from english or german to spanish.

Thanks!
